Africa Beyond Visual Arts Residency: Mahmoud Khaled (Egypt)

Art residency in London initiated by Africa Beyond in partnership with Gasworks and in association with Iniva.

Mahmoud Khaled

During his residency, Khaled has undertaken a research project investigating the careers of male belly dancers based in London. The point of departure for the project was Khaled’s accidental discovery of HYPERLINK "http://www.khaled-goldenhips.co.uk/"Khaled Mahmoud, a popular London-based belly dancer born in Cairo, whose identity emerged from the field of search results generated by the artist when he ‘googled’ his own name. He has interviewed Khaled Mahmoud as well as other London-based performers, and is interested in exploring their relationship to issues of gender identity and notions of cultural ‘authenticity’. As part of this project, Khaled presented a performance at Iniva entitled Google Me .

While in London, Khaled has also been developing two ongoing projects: Re/Arranged Marriage , which investigates the wedding ceremony as a socio-cultural construct, and MKMAEL , exploring the politics of identity formation in virtual environments through relationships established online by the artist’s alter ego, MKMAEL.

Khaled lives and works in Alexandria, Egypt. In 2004, he received his BFA in painting from Alexandria University. He has participated in a number of international exhibitions and projects including All Clear (Salzburg, 2007), Out of Place (Beirut, 2007), and the 1st Biennial of the Canaries (2006). He has been awarded a number of residencies including the Sally and Lucas Artists Programs Residency at the Montalvo Arts Center, Saratoga, California and the artist's residency at the F+F School for Media Art and Design, Zurich, Switzerland. He is also a founding member of the not-for-profit art initiative and gallery Alexandria Contemporary Art Forum.
