The Green Arrows - 4-Track Recording Sessions

(Analog Africa/ AA061)

greenarows1.jpg

Back in the 70’s The Green Arrows were the quintessential Zimbabwean band, mixing traditional and modern with their own take on shaping the sounds of a ‘new’ Rhodesia flexing its political and musical muscles. Since then the Green Arrows consistently produced music imbibed with hope, foresight and passion for their country. Tales of the stories from the early days, tell of gigs lasting over two days with the band encouraging the audience to drink as much beer as possible! Fronted by the huge personality of Zexie Manatsa, the audiences were taken on an extraordinary journey, and as the decade unfolded the Green Arrows music began to push boundaries, combining the old traditional sounds and languages with real musicianship, politics and creativity.

This compilation showcases tracks that the Green Arrows recorded from 1974 -1979,  including tracks from ‘Chipo Chiroorwa’,  the first LP ever to be recorded in the country and which includes the number one track ‘Musango Mune Hangaiwa’. This CD makes a perfect introduction into a particular genre of southern African music, a very listenable and upbeat compilation that will make you smile. The track to back is ‘Hurungwe’, a cheeky little number with a sprightly guitar rift and ‘call and response’ banter. A joy.
