Various Artists - South African Gospel

(Arc Music/ EUCD 2005)

Various Artists South African Gospe

South African gospel might have a similar spiritual root as its American counterpart, although the heady, historical fusion of styles and experience that has shaped African-American gospel, is a very differing musical moment. South African Gospel is based around Zulu harmonies, rather than West African. So instead of the vocal rawness, the sound is much smoother.

This compilation attempts to highlight some of the facets of South African gospel music. One of the standout performances coming from Youth In Action, who display a wonderful vibrancy to both the singing and arrangements, as well as some stunning guitar work, especially on 'Wenjenje U Thixo' and 'Jesus Is Waiting.' The ever popular Soweto Gospel Choir, perhaps the best known of the participants, is pure class, as is Steve Kekana, the blind musician and lawyer whose hit spans decades.

However, for those of you seeking the rambunctious, jubilation of no holds barred inspirational worship, you may be a little disappointed. All the tracks are well-polished and produced, but often lack in bite. Albeit, a gentle introduction to yet another genre of music from the most dynamitic and musically innovative continent. Hallelujah!
